Exploring Italian Maiolica with Jason Green

Jason Green's artwork using sculptural tile and architectural ceramic form is informed by his past experience living and teaching in Tuscany. This two-week workshop will focus on using both traditional and experimental maiolica glazing techniques. The maiolica process involves painting metallic pigments on top of tin-glazed earthenware. Italian maiolica thrived during the Renaissance as a decorative technique for tile, pottery and sculpture. Through demonstrations, presentations and site visits, participants will learn the history of Italian maiolica and the principles of pattern design for tile and vessel forms. Along with intensive studio investigation, visits to regional locations of ceramic production, historical sites, and art museums will provide information and inspiration for all levels of makers. No prior experience with ceramics is necessary. May 19 - June 2, 2026 Class hours: M-F 9 am - 1 pm

FRANCE COURSE FEES- include train station pickup to/from the commune of Mailly-le-Château, single or double room occupancy in the beautiful Château de Mailly, with access to kitchen facility, fresh morning coffee, tea, breads and croissants, catered gourmet lunches and dinners, classrooms, daily class sessions with your instructor, weekly excursions including Paris, and sites in Burgundy such as Vézelay and Autun. A group exhibition and poetry reading takes place at the end of the session.

ITALY COURSE FEES- include round trip shuttle service to and from Rome Airport, three gourmet Umbrian meals per day, single or double room accommodations (upgrades available for an additional fee), studio space, daily class sessions with your instructor, weekly excursions to important cultural sites in Umbria and Tuscany such as Florence, Orvieto and Assisi. A group exhibition takes place at the end of the session.
