Finding Simplicity and Complexity in the Umbrian Landscape with Cathy Lebowitz

This session will focus on drawing both outdoors and in the studio, using direct observation of our surroundings as a point of departure for sustained investigation. We will draw on site and return to the studio to develop our observations in a variety of mediums. The stunning hilltop town of Monte Castello di Vibio offers unique opportunities for studying composition, abstraction, color, and shifting spatial relationships. Group discussions and critiques will be an integral part of the session, providing opportunities to consider individual approaches, exchange ideas, and reflect on how a drawing changes over time. Students are encouraged to work across a range of materials, including pencil, collage, watercolor, and gouache. The changes in medium will support approaches ranging from observational sketches to more layered and constructed work. Throughout the session, drawing will be understood not simply as a record of what is seen, but as a flexible process for discovering structure, simplifying or complicating an image, and developing a personal response to place.

FRANCE COURSE FEES- include train station pickup to/from the commune of Mailly-le-Château, single or double room occupancy in the beautiful Château de Mailly, with access to kitchen facility, fresh morning coffee, tea, breads and croissants, catered gourmet lunches and dinners, classrooms, daily class sessions with your instructor, weekly excursions including Paris, and sites in Burgundy such as Vézelay and Autun. A group exhibition and poetry reading takes place at the end of the session.

ITALY COURSE FEES- include round trip shuttle service to and from Rome Airport, three gourmet Umbrian meals per day, single or double room accommodations (upgrades available for an additional fee), studio space, daily class sessions with your instructor, weekly excursions to important cultural sites in Umbria and Tuscany such as Florence, Orvieto and Assisi. A group exhibition takes place at the end of the session.

You may enroll in an additional class in the same session (at a different time of day) for a discounted rate of $650 for a two-week class.
